Highland Scenic Highway Hike

Description

Introduction to the Highland Scenic Highway. The Scenic Highway is a 43-mile highway in Pocahontas County. We will make a quick stop at the Cranberry Nature Center (if open) to walk through their small museum and look over the valley to the south. Then the fun starts: first stop - Black Mountain Overlook, a 600 foot long boardwalk. Next - check out geologic formations at the ΒΌ-mile Honeycomb Rock Trail. Finally - the real hiking of this adventure will be Red Spruce Knob Trail, a total of 2.4 miles. Elevation gain is 380 feet to the highest point on the Scenic Highway at 4703 feet. The moss-covered stand of red spruce is magical. Return to civilization in Marlinton, where we can check out a little of the Greenbrier River Trail, rest and snack! Meet at the Hollowell Park lot on GMS Drive in Lewisburg at 9:00 a.m. to carpool/caravan. A small contribution for gas ($3-$4) is appreciated but not necessary. Whether you plan to meet there or at the nature center, contact the leader ON THIS PAGE ahead of time for planning. Depending on number of hikers, additional drivers may be needed. NOTE: This will be a day-long adventure, but what a great way to spend a day in May! We will definitely return to the Scenic Highway later this year for another hike!!! Youth must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay with them during the activity. Active SWV has developed a new online program which provides FREE membership and easy, easy access to all FREE programs. Find it at www.activeswv.com. You can also fill out a waiver in person at the hike. Please do not attend programs if you are feeling ill. Regarding Community Captain Programs and groups of children: All Active SWV Community Captain programs are family friendly; children are invited to attend with the expectation of a parent/guardian ratio of 1 guardian adult to 5 children.
