Description
Kate’s Mountain in Greenbrier State Forest on Saturday, November 22. Read the information carefully and any “takers” MUST contact CC Becky ahead of time. This is not an easy hike! Even the guidebooks say it is not for those who are out of shape. (Note: My personal plan is to build up mileage in the weeks before this hike.) The hike climbs 1,000 feet to the top of Kate’s Mountain, and you will feel like you will never reach the summit. Hiking back down is not easy either. Again, guidebooks call it “unrelentingly steep”. We are not doing the entire loop trail but hope to “spot” one vehicle at the ranger station and another at the picnic area.
We’ll start hiking around 10 a.m. Bring plenty of water and lunch to eat along the way, plus snacks. You need shoes with sturdy soles, and hiking poles will help on the steep parts. I have some extras.
With all of that said, the hike provides a good overlook view to the west and north, interesting history, and bragging rights! Here is the FB page where you can message me: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1367844966948468 It is public, so you should be able to send a message.
Youth must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay with them during the activity. Active SWV has developed a new online program which provides FREE membership and easy, easy access to all FREE programs. Find it at www.activeswv.com. You can also fill out a waiver in person at the hike.
