Two-in-One Hike

Saturday, March 16, 2024 (9:00 AM - 11:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Two-in-One Hike!  On Saturday, March 16th join Community Captain Victoria on an easy one-mile walk along the boardwalk at Sandstone Falls near Hinton.  As the largest waterfall on the New River, the falls span the entire 1500 foot width of the river and are part of the New River Gorge National Park.  Also rated easy is the half-mile Island Loop Trail at the falls.  More challenging...THEN join Community Captain Becky for a two-mile loop at Big Branch Falls, following a stream up a valley.  There are five (or more) waterfalls, numerous stream crossings, rocks and exposed roots on the trail.    Meet at The Hub in Lewisburg at 9:00 a.m. to carpool/caravan to the trail; if meeting at the trailhead, contact the leader ON THIS SITE for details.  The Hub is located at 232 Lee St Building C, Lewisburg, WV 24901; to reach the parking lot, use the alley to the north of Lee Street Studios OR take the alley off GMS Drive, just west of a parking area close to WVSOM.  Please understand that we may need additional persons to drive, depending on number of hikers.   And be sure that everyone in a “car” plans to hike the same difficulty level.

All hikes are made possible through Get Active In The Park, a partnership between Active SWV and the National Park Service. Get Active in the Park activities are perfect for grand-families, groups with multiple interests, and individuals. All are welcome! Youth are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay on site during the activity. Get Active in the Park is an innovative partnership between the National Park Service and Active Southern West Virginia. Trained Community Captains deliver free, beginner-level instructional programs to the New River Gorge region. Get Active in the Park empowers our community to see outdoor spaces as a place for health and wellness to take place.

Regarding Community Captain Programs and groups of children: All Active SWV Community Captain programs are family friendly; children are invited to attend with the expectation of a parent/guardian ratio of 1 guardian adult to 5 children. It is our expectation for larger groups of children (e.g. Scouts, youth groups, etc), that an adult to child ratio of 1 adult to 5 children be observed in ages 5 and under, and 1 adult to 10 children be observed for ages 5 and above.
*This hike will occur weather permitting! Please be aware if road conditions are bad, there will be no hike due to limited maintenance for Fayette Station Road.
Please complete Active SWV FREE membership prior to the program.
