Meet-Up Time/Place: 9:00 AM at The Hub in Lewisburg to carpool/caravan. Use the alley north of Lee Street Studios or off GMS Drive (just west of a parking area near WVSOM). If meeting at the trailhead, contact the hike leader through this site for details.
About This Event:
Enjoy a double waterfall adventure on this two-stop hiking day! We’ll begin with the stunning and serene Sandstone Falls, followed by a more rugged and scenic hike along the Big Branch Falls Trail.
What to Expect:
🌊 Sandstone Falls (Easy):
• One-mile round trip on an accessible boardwalk
• Views of the New River’s widest waterfall, stretching over 1,500 feet
• Optional: half-mile Island Loop Trail for a nature-filled add-on
💧 Big Branch Falls (Moderate to Challenging):
• Two-mile loop with multiple waterfalls, stream crossings, and scenic valley views
• Trail includes rocks, roots, and potentially slippery surfaces
• You may get wet—stream crossings are part of the fun!
How to Prepare:
• Wear hiking boots or trail shoes with good tread
• Bring water and snacks
• Dress for the weather and wear quick-dry layers
• Hiking poles recommended for stream crossings
• Be prepared to get your feet wet—bring a towel or dry shoes for afterward
Transportation Note:
We may need additional drivers depending on the group size. Please coordinate in advance and ensure everyone in each car plans to hike at the same difficulty level.

It is our expectation for larger groups of children (e.g. Scouts, youth groups, etc), that an adult to child ratio of 1 adult to 5 children be observed in ages 5 and under, and 1 adult to 10 children be observed for ages 5 and above. All hikes are made possible through Get Active In The Park, a partnership between Active SWV and the National Park Service. Get Active in the Park activities are perfect for grand-families, groups with multiple interests, and individuals. All are welcome! Youth are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay on site during the activity. Get Active in the Park is an innovative partnership between the National Park Service and Active Southern West Virginia. Trained Community Captains deliver free, beginner-level instructional programs to the New River Gorge region. Get Active in the Park empowers our community to see outdoor spaces as a place for health and wellness to take place.
